Grand Theft Auto IV Sets $500M Sales Record

Gta4

Grand Theft Auto IV has sold over 6 million copies since its release at the end of April. The hit game made $500 million in sales in one week. Rockstar Games and parent company Take-Two are patting each other on the back over a job well done. They’re not big on modesty so they were the first to name it the “biggest event in entertainment history.” Well, it’s hard to say otherwise, all things considered.

Putting things into perspective, Halo 3 previously had the record with $300 million in sales.

A simultaneous release on both the Xbox 360 and PS3 certainly attributed to the game’s success. GTA has built a great reputation with gamers and its brand is unlikely to fail any time soon.

Graphical Overhaul for World of Warcraft?

WorldofWarcaft_LogoIn an interview with EuroGamer, World of Warcraft producer, J. Allen Brack hinted at the possibility of a graphical upgrade to the popular MMO. Despite its insane popularity, WoW has often been criticized by gamers for being “too cartoony” and for lacking in the pretty graphics many games employ these days. With the upcoming expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, WoW will see a few minor graphical updates.

Though it is likely that Blizzard is considering major upgrades to the current client, it’s very likely that we won’t see a major overhaul for a while to come. J. Allen Brack pointed out that, “A lot of people continued to play with the original client, because it was faster, or they preferred it, or were just used to it or whatever and so for me as a game developer, the idea that we would spend so much time and energy on something and have people go, ‘meh, that’s not really for me,’ that’s not very exciting.”

It doesn’t sound to me that Blizzard’s got graphical overhaul as a major priority at the moment, but as technology continues to improve it’s likely that we will see something along those lines in the future.

WoTLK Friends and Family Alpha Patch Notes Leaked!

When you’re excitedly looking for more and more news about the coming Wrath of the Lich King expansion, you’re probably going to take anything at all even if there’s a likelihood that it’s not all true or even entirely false. According to MMO Champion, some information has leaked out from the patch notes of the WoTLK Friends and Family alpha and the info is listed below. It’s not confirmed if this is indeed true but it does seem like it could very well be. None of the information seems to be unlikely at least.

Update: Both MMO Champion and World of Raids pulled out their posts about this due to problems with the Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA). Just to be safe I did too. Guess we’ll have to rely on the information that Blizzard releases as it should be. Hope we don’t have to wait too long to see the new spells and talents in store for all the classes.

The9: Confident to get WoW license again

I know, World of Warcraft isn’t exactly an Asian-made MMORPG, but the fact that China-based online games publisher The9 is operating the massive franchise is enough for MMOtaku to include it in any story lineup.

World of Warcraft ChinaIn 17173.com article entitled “The9 in Negotiation with Blizzard on Renewing WoW License,” the new president of The9, the beautiful Chen Xiaowei, said they were confident to get the deal.

Here’s an excerpt of the story:

As confirmed by The9, the company is now conducting a negotiation with Blizzard Entertainment to renew the license of World of Warcraft … The result of the negotiation is critical to The9, since WoW earnings took comprise 90 percent of the company’s total revenues … Chen Xiaowei, new president of The9, told the press that they were now discussing with Blizzard on continuing the licensing of WoW. With the latest announcement of Wrath of The Lich King and the long-term cooperation of Blizzard, The9 will try its best to speed up the negotiation.

GameSetLinks: Artsy Game Overload!

http://www.wowgoldos.com/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/0e356_castcrash.jpg Yeehah, a pleasant Tuesday brings us a bunch more GameSetLinks, and while I’m wandering around Southern California (watch for a special arcade report soonish), there’s plenty of links to hit around the blogosphere.

Among the highlights this time - the ‘Artsy Games Incubator’ throws up some gems, Castle Crashers (pictured) is in some danger of actually getting released, and Mega64’s obnoxious puppet Marcus starts a new game-related chat show for the ages.

Ready, steady, cook:

No Media Kings » Free Artsy Games Released
Jim Munroe: ‘The second round of the Artsy Games Incubator went terrific: check out Mouse Police, Bungee Fisher, Cupcake Challenge, Albacross, and my own Baby Runs This Mofo.’

Ars Technica: ‘Ars Technica acquired by Condé Nast: the low-down’
Notable cos it adds some pretty decent game coverage to the Conde Nast portfolio, which also includes Wired/Wired.com of course.

TIGSource: ‘Castle Crashers Is Complete’
Praise the Lord, finally - hope it doesn’t get stuck in a Torpex-style infinite loop, mind you.

Peter Molyneux: My Next Game a ‘Significant Scientific Achievement’ | Game | Life from Wired.com
“I’m being really careful,” he tells me. “I will only talk about real tangible features of the game that I can show.” Good for him!

Leading Wolves » Blog Archive » gamertestingground.com
On those ubiquitous game testing scam sites, referencing an earlier GSW post: ’skip giving out your hard-earned money to con-men’, indeed.

Tynan Sylvester » Blog Archive » The Idiots of Garry’s Mod
I believe this is old, but wow, awesome video - machinima can be incredibly idiotically funny.

Goodbye Surfer Girl « The Space Oddity
Space Oddity busts out something interesting - potentially correct too, I reckon: ‘The rumors floating around the internet about Gearbox developing a new Halo game are absolutely true. Expect to see an official announcement very soon!’

Water Cooler Games - Budget Hero
‘Budget Hero is the new serious game about balancing the federal budget, from American Public Media.’

Strafe Left: The Formative Years #30 | Rock, Paper, Shotgun
Hey, Roguelike cartoon humor.

Mega64: Marcus’ Corner, Episode 1 - ‘David Jaffe’
Basically I love anything Mega64 does ever. Thank you!

Kryzta and Precision

Kryzta

Two new mini-games released by cactus recently! The first is Kryzta, an “anti-shooter” where you defeat your enemies with their own bullets. Collect the power-ups they drop to shield yourself (or press “Z” to unleash a devastating attack with them). Its fun and fast, and features another great track from John Marwin (the musician behind Clean Asia).

Kryzta was made for a minigame competition at The Poppenkast.

Precision

The second game, Precision, is all about precision platform jumping. The way jumping works in this game is interesting, though – you have no control over the jump while in mid-air. The length of your jump is determined entirely by your velocity when you leave the ground. It definitely makes it challenging to get through the game’s seven levels, but fortunately, your character leaves a trail which can be reviewed with each successive attempt.

Obviously I’m already a big fan of cactus (some have argued unfairly so!), but I feel like these two games, aside from being imbued with cactus’s inimitable style, do a great job of exploring the nuances of the game mechanics they employ with such needlepoint focus. And the fact that he can make these games so quickly (6 hours for Kryzta) reminds me that we’re at the point where game development can really be as spontaneous as doodling with pen on paper. Sweeeeeet.

Casual Games not Cheap, Says UbiSoft

ubisoft logoAs spotted on Joystiq.com, game developer, UbiSoft declared that although casual games may be far more inexpensive to produce, it takes much more money to promote and market.

This was revealed by UbiSoft North America president, Detoc, in an interview with San Francisco Chronicle.  He also said that a big chunk of the recent success is due to the low development costs of casual games and the market’s acceptance on the genre.
